Genetic Epidemiology, Translational Neurogenomics, Psychiatric Genetics and Statistical Genetics Laboratories
investigate the pattern of disease in families, particularly identical and non-identical twins, to
assess the relative importance of genes and environment in a variety of important health problems.

John
Whitfield was the
Principal Scientist and Laboratory Manager for Biochemistry at Royal PrinceAlfredHospital in Sydney. Originally from the UK, he has engaged strongly with Australasian clinical
biochemistry, having been at various times Secretary and President of the AACB and a member of innumerable committees. He has also been an Executive
Board member and Secretary of the IFCC, and is currently a member of the IFCC
Working Group on Carbohydrate-Deficient Transferrin and corresponding member of
the Committee on Evidence-Based Laboratory Medicine.
His research interests cover
biological and genetic markers for alcohol-related disease, and genetic causes
of variation in biochemical risk factors for cardiovascular and metabolic
disease. A focus on the role of genetic testing for risk assessment in
polygenic common diseases, and the need for evidence of benefit from
personalised medicine, serves to unite his research and management interests.
