ACCESS

Cycle paths near QIMR

Several bicycle routes converge on the RBWH/QIMR campus.

  • From the Northside, Kedron Brook Road-Noble Street-Enoggera Creek Bikeway-Bicycle bridge-Butterfield Street (and then through the hospital, or up Bramston Terrace, or around via Hetherington Street and Herston Road)
  • Also from the Northside, via Wooloowin following the railway, then the bikeway along Breakfast Creek to O'Connell Terrace. This may be extended through Bowen Park to the new cycle path that runs under Bowen Bridge Road (you can already ride through the park, but it is a narrow path with a couple of steps at the end).
  • From the east, a short cyclepath along beside the ICB, then through to Newstead.
  • From the City, the cycleway from the Roma Street Parklands. This then allows access to the cycle path along the River towards Toowong, and via the Goodwill Bridge to the SE Freeway cycle path.
  • From the west, the Enoggera Creek Bikeway (Ashgrove, Bardon, the Gap).

Another route south that sees a few cyclists is along the (western) pavement (or in the traffic) on Brunswick Street, Gibbs Street and the Story Bridge. Then, for example, one can rejoin the SE Freeway cycle path via River Terrace.

PEOPLE

There at least forty people who cycle on a regular basis to/from QIMR. I know of eight lab heads alone! There are a full range of riders, from those who ride from where their car is parked, to the more gung ho. Michael Smout counts bikes every year for a competition in Bicycle Week (usually in March). We usually seem to win in our division.

The main organisers of any formal QIMR cycling events/policy pushes etc include Simone Cross, Michael Smout, David Whiteman.
